The Panzer IV provided fire support to lighter tanks, its role evolving over time. It was the sole German tank produced continuously throughout the war. Initially scarce in Poland in 1939, each Panzer battalion had one platoon, with some exceptions. By the Battle of France, each battalion fielded a full Mittlere Panzerkompanie equipped with Panzer IV tanks.
