Forgestar's innovative Rotary Forged Flow forming technique addresses a common challenge: creating a lightweight yet robust wheel. Initiating with low-pressure casting, a specialized machine spins the initial casting, applying heat to the outer portion, and then employs steel rollers to shape the rim to its final dimensions. The combination of heat, pressure, and spinning results in a rim area as strong as a forged wheel. During Flow Forming, the pressure alters the cast rim's mechanical properties, matching those of a forged rim, leading to up to 15% weight reduction compared to standard cast wheels. The resulting linear grain structure, flowing in a single direction, coupled with the high casting quality, enhances the rim's mechanical strength and elongation. Consequently, Forgestar can reduce rim thickness, minimizing weight without compromising strength or impact resistance.
